Project:Phases
Librarybase will gradually launch for the public in three phases. We are currently on Phase 1.
Phase 1
- Operated as a project of Scatter LLC
- Single server with potential second server to test replication. These "servers" are Harej's home workstations.
- New user accounts are created only by invitation.
- Policies and new data import projects are approved by Harej.
- Harej is the sole steward.
At this phase, the priority is establishing a baseline for technical requirements, with a hand-selected user base and set of pilot projects. These pilot projects will stress test the setup and set further technical direction of the project.
Phase 2
- Still operated as a project of Scatter LLC
- Hosted on rented servers with 1Gbps uplink, allowing for more traffic and usage of Librarybase in general.
- Registration is open to the public.
- Policies and new projects are approved by the community through an agreed-upon process.
- One or more additional stewards will be appointed to increase community participation in governance.
Following the limited tests of Phase 1, the transition to Phase 2 will see Librarybase launch as a public-facing service.
Phase 3
Once Librarybase achieves a sufficient degree of community buy-in and support, Librarybase will spin off from Scatter and become its own free-standing project. This will be achieved through a service like OpenCollective or by pursuing fiscal sponsorship at an established nonprofit by some other means.
Accordingly, the role of steward will expand to include project fiduciary. Stewards will be responsible for determining how resources are allocated toward the project. Given the significance of this expanded role, a process for the appointment and removal of stewards shall be clearly established beforehand.
Once the project reaches Phase 3, there will be no further phases unless the project itself is restructured in some deeply fundamental manner.
